GUIDES TO PREPARE ABSTRACTS FOR SOMEMMA 2010
IMPORTAN NOTE: Due to the organization of the academic program, at least one of the authors of accepted abstracts must register and pay before midnight of April 9th (in this case pre-registration fees will be applied). Authors that fail to meet the later will be retired from the academic program and the abstract book.
In this occasion, only two abstracts will be accepted as leading author, only if both are significantly different as judged by the Coordinator of the academic program.
1. Content.
Title: The title must reflect properly and briefly the main topic and the content of the work.
Scientific value. Abstracts must be derived from original works with new and relevant information of marine mammals. Abstracts that are detected as repetitions of previously presented and/or published research, having no progress or discussion (based on new data) will not be accepted.
Clarity. Abstracts must be brief, logical and unequivocal. All the elements that are necessary to describe the research must be balanced and found in a logical sequence; for instance, the introduction contains the background and justification that derives in the research goals; if it’s pertinent, the goals should lead to a hypothesis. The methods must be properly presented such that it allows to test the hypothesis or to meet the goals. Results and discussion must be closely associated with the hypothesis or the research goals and must reach a conclusion.
Goals: They should be easily identified and must be coherent with the facts that give origin to the research.
Materials y Methods: They must be detailed, including the experimental design, sampling techniques and analytical procedures. It is fundamental that the method is adequate to test the work hypothesis or to accomplish the goals of the research.
Results and Discussion: Only the most important findings must be presented. The implications and conclusions derived from the results must be clearly included. Abstracts that do not clearly state the results and discussion of the research will not be accepted. For instance, if an abstract only says “results from 5 field trips are presented, showing the distribution of cetaceans in the area and discussing the consequences of such distribution patterns", it will not be accepted because it does not say what those patters are and what are their implications.
2. Format.
Title: A maximum 255 characters will be allowed. Species or taxa must be clear and specified.
Abstract body: We allow a maximum of 300 words, single spaced and continuously written (no separate paragraphs) in justified 12pt Times New Roman font. No subtitles, references or citations must be included, unless the research explicitly involves a hypothesis or question formulated by another author.
Specifications:
a) Scientific names must be in italics (not underlined).

Words or latin prhases must be in italics:i.e., e.g., ca., in vivo, in situ, et al., sensu, a priori.
INSTRUCTIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ORAL PRESENTATIONS
Every speaker must bring to the Rehearsal Room their PowerPoint file (Office 2003 or Windows XP) at least one day before their presentation. The file name must include the date and hour of the presentation (format: 2010-05-XX_hh-mm), and the last name of the main author in capital letters. Presentations should contain as least text as possible, using contrasting colors for the text and the background. Font type must be Arial and size will be 30 pt minimum (in Power Point). Make sure all figures, graphics and legends are big enough to be read with no effort. Since this is an international meeting, we recommend that if you speak English, the presentation is translated to Spanish and vice versa. Talks will last 15 minutes with 4 minutes for questions and one minute to switch between rooms. The Session Chair will notify the speaker 5 and 1 minutes before the time expires; once it finishes, he will proceed to the questions, and no exceptions will be made. It is suggested that while rehearsing your talk, it finishes at least two minutes before the specified time, so the pauses that are normal during the presentation allow you to finish it on time.
INSTRUCCIONS AND RECOMMENDACIONES FOR POSTERS
Each author will have a designated space for their work, which will be specified during the registration on site. Additionally, a digital copy (CD or USB) of the poster must be delivered during registration in PDF (300ppp resolution). All posters will be burned into a CD that will be given as a complement to the abstract book. Posters must be 90x120cm using as much space as possible, try to reduce the amount of text, and use contrasting colors for paragraphs and background. Font size must be 35 pt minimum. Graphics should be big enough so the audience can read the legends with no effort. The title of the work must be at the upper margin, followed by the author(s) name(s) and institution(s), and must include an e-mail address. The text cannot contain the abstract and must follow a logical order that allow a sequential reading, including figures, tables and maps. We recommend to place a 7x5cm (minimum) picture of the author at the upper right margin of each poster. Miniposters prints are not recommended, since all works will be compiled into a CD. Authors must remain at their designated space during the poster session, otherwise they won’t be evaluated for the student contest. Posters will remain until the last oral session of the Reunion.
